If your Slip trip keeps breaking on a suppressed MP5 build, the problem probably isn't your trigger. It's your locking piece.

The locking piece is a small, wedge-shaped component that sits inside the bolt carrier of the MP5's roller-delayed blowback system. Its angled surface dictates how long the rollers resist camming inward, which directly controls the mechanical delay before the bolt unlocks after firing. Change that angle, and you change the entire operating behavior of your gun.

  • 120° — MP5SD

Here's what most people miss: changing the locking piece angle also shifts your bolt gap. The correct bolt gap spec for the MP5 is 0.010" to 0.020". One documented swap from a 100° piece to an 80° piece moved the gap from 0.013" to 0.025", pushing it out of spec. That's a safety concern, not just a tuning detail.

The HK Armorer's Manual is explicit on two points. First, locking pieces must not be ground or stoned to alter their angle. Second, locking pieces for different major variants must not be interchanged. Buy the correct angle for your application.

A brief note for MP5/40 and MP5/10 owners: a 60-degree locking piece exists for those high-impulse platforms, particularly for +P+ loads. It's an almost entirely ignored tuning variable in those ecosystems, but it matters if you're pushing pressure limits.

Standard Full-Size MP5 (HK, PTR 9C, Zenith ZF-5)

Factory spec is 100°, and that's your correct starting point for unsuppressed use. No reason to deviate unless you're adding a suppressor or running an FRT setup (more on that below).

MP5K Variants (HK MP5K, MKE AP5, Century AP5-P, PTR 9KT, Zenith ZF-5P)

The original MP5K shipped with a 110° locking piece, but HK later standardized the MP5K to 100° as well. For unsuppressed use, stay at 100°. Don't chase the 110° unless you have a specific, documented reason.

MP5K-PDW Configuration (Folding Stock + Suppressor)

HK officially recommends the #28 (80°) locking piece for this configuration. The history matters: in the early 1990s, the combination of a shoulder stock, suppressor, and 147-grain subsonic ammo drove the MP5K's cyclic rate past 1,200 RPM (normal is around 900 RPM). That 33%+ increase caused failures to feed and bent extractor springs. The #28 was developed specifically to solve that problem.

Critical warning: the 80° piece requires both a stock and a suppressor to function reliably. Running the #28 without a can risks insufficient bolt energy for reliable cycling. If your gun short-strokes or fails to lock back, the locking piece angle is too aggressive for your configuration.

MP5SD Variant

The SD ships with a 120° locking piece, and there's a sound engineering reason for it. The SD's ported barrel bleeds gas pressure before the bullet exits the muzzle, so the system operates at lower pressure. The higher-angle piece (which unlocks faster) compensates for that reduced energy. Do not swap to a lower-angle piece on the SD. This is one of the most frequently misunderstood deviations on the platform.

Suppressed Non-SD MP5 (Any Barrel Length)

Adding a suppressor to a standard MP5 increases dwell time and back pressure. The bolt gets driven rearward with significantly more energy, causing over-cycling, accelerated roller wear, and in extreme cases, receiver dimpling. Switching to an 80° or 90° locking piece counteracts this added energy and brings the cycle rate back into a healthy range.

Clone-Specific Note

MKE AP5, Century AP5-P, and PTR 9KT owners: always verify bolt gap after any locking piece swap. Clone tolerances vary from OEM HK specifications, and forum guidance written for original HK guns may not apply directly to your host. Measure twice.

Locking Piece Selection for FRT and Super Safety Applications

Here's the core problem that brings most people to this article: an overly fast bolt cycle caused by a suppressor or heavy ammo causes the FRT trip to break prematurely or fail to reset. This is the number one underreported reliability issue on suppressed MP5 FRT builds, and it traces directly back to the locking piece. Go down in angle if you see signs that your gun is cycling to violently.

The fix is well-documented in the community. Switching to an 90°- 80° locking piece resolved FRT trip breakage on suppressed 124gr loads, while 115gr unsuppressed still cycled without issue on the same setup. The locking piece controls the violence of the bolt cycle, and the FRT trip is the component that absorbs the consequences. However, do not change locking angle unless you fimd this to be an issue. Jumping the gun and going down in angle prematurely will typically lead to a gun not cycling.
